  • Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a very famous temple for Lord Shiva located in Mylapore(Chennai).As per the history,the temple was built around the 7th century CE in Dravidian architecture by the ruling Pallavas.
  • In this temple,lord Shiva is worshiped as Kapaleeswarar (represented by the lingam).His consort Parvati worshipped as Karpagambal.

  • Another intresting fact is,The name "Kapaleeshwarar Temple" is derived from the words Kapalam(head) and Eswarar(other name of lord Shiva).As per the history, during the meeting (in Mount Kailash) of Brahma and Shiva, Brahma didnot give the due respect to Shiva. Because of this, Shiva plucked Brahma's kapalams(of one his head).In an act of penance, Brahma came down (to the place of Mylapore) and installed a Lingam to please Lord Shiva.
  • The temple priests perform the rituals daily basis and also during festivals.The rituals(pooja) are performed six times a day like Ushathkalam (6AM),Kalasanthi(9AM),Uchikalam(1PM),Sayarakshai(5PM),Irandamkalam(7PM) and Ardha Jamam (9PM).
  • A big festivals for this temple is,10 day Panguni (One of the month name in Tamil) Peruvizha in March-April including celebrations for 63 Saivite saints(Arubathimooval festival) drawing a huge crowd of devotees. 
  • There are rituals like Somavaram and Sukravaram,pradosham and Amavasai (new moon day),Kiruthigai, Pournami (full moon day),Maha Shivaratri and Sathurthi and Lord Shiva related festivals are observed in the temple.
